The Multiple Benefits of Invisalign
The spelling of Invisalign references exactly what the treatment does. It is a process that uses clear, invisible aligners, also called trays, to align the teeth. When teeth are crooked or rotated or when a patient has a deep bite or any other bite abnormalities, Invisalign can correct these misalignment issues. And while Invisalign has been around for decades, not everyone has heard of it and not everyone knows that it is an alternative to traditional metal braces.

Water Safety in the Dental Office
Have you ever wondered about the quality of the water used during your dental visits? What Are Suction Cup Dentures?
Some patients who wear false teeth are unable to keep their dentures in place without the aid of an adhesive. Sometimes the anatomy or shape of the jawbone itself prevents the denture from fitting tightly. And the longer someone wears dentures, the more the bone can shrink over time, eventually causing less retention of the denture.

Dental Injection Comfort System
Most people would admit to being fearful of something. That something might be a fear of heights, a fear of crowded or small spaces, a fear of spiders, or a fear of the dentist, with the latter being most common. While most people who are afraid of the dentist are not necessarily afraid of the overall dental experience, they often dread the discomfort associated with the dental needle. This apprehension can not only cause a lot of anxiety and stress, but ultimately, it can lead some people to avoid going to the dentist. Our job is to continue to seek out new products and techniques that can make dental anesthesia less painful. Towards that end, we have recently begun using a device called the Vibraject Injection Comfort System. The Vibraject is a small battery operated motor that clips onto the dental syringe. When turned on, it vibrates similar to the way that a cell phone vibrates. It operates based on the principles of the Gate Control Theory of Pain. It is thought that one sensory input to the brain can close the nerve “gates” to a different sensory input, thereby decreasing the sensation of pain that reaches the brain. The vibrations from the Vibraject can help to override the pain signals from the needle, so the patient feels less pinching and stinging from the needle and more vibration and buzzing from the Vibraject.

Treatment Options for the Dental Phobic Patient
Many patients present to our office with a fear of the dentist. This fear may have arisen from a traumatic prior experience or it may be associated with “White Coat Syndrome”. Some patients simply have anxiety due to the noises found in the dental office (these noises can be from the dental drill or from the instruments used to examine or clean the teeth). For others, the anxiety may stem from a fear of dental anesthesia or some other part of the dental treatment. These patients almost always inquire if we can put them to sleep for their treatment. While we do not administer anything that would put someone to sleep, we can offer patients something that will make them more relaxed and less anxious during their treatment. This is known as conscious sedation. The patient is awake and able to talk and interact with the staff, but they are less aware of and less focused on all of the different aspects of their dental treatment. This form of sedation can also provide other benefits. It makes it easier for patients to open their mouths wide since their facial muscles are relaxed. And those who gag easily may find that their gag reflex relaxes as well.

A Quick Cure for Your Cold Sore
If you are someone prone to getting cold sores, also known as fever blisters, you know that they almost always occur at inopportune times. They develop on or along the border of the lips and seem to pop up just before you have a presentation at work or before a dinner out with friends, or before a family vacation. This is because, in addition to being caused by exposure to sun and wind, by a cold, or by a weakened immune system, they can also be brought on by stress. Unfortunately, not only are they sometimes painful and almost always unattractive (as they often appear as fluid filled blisters which then burst and crust over), but they are also contagious.

Keeping a Healthy Smile During the Pandemic
Most of us, at this time, are trying our best to adhere to the Stay at Home Orders that have been put in place in almost every state in the U.S.. We recognize, that while challenging, it is likely the best way to minimize contact with others and to slow down the spread of the virus. But if you’re anything like me, staying at home for prolonged periods of time means overstocking my fridge, eating things that I might not normally consume and snacking more often, sometimes just to counteract boredom. It then becomes, ever more important to make sure that we are all doing our best to maintain good oral hygiene during these times.

Can Wisdom Teeth Make My Other Teeth Crooked?
This is an age old question that is often posed to us by our patients. Many patients understand that the wisdom teeth often erupt into the mouth in a less than ideal position. Sometimes this can cause them to tilt towards the teeth in front of them. If often seems that the time period during which they erupt (late teens to early and mid twenties), coincides with crowding of the lower front teeth. While both of these things might occur around the same rough time frame, one does not necessarily cause the other.

Dental Treatment During Pregnancy
It is important to not neglect your oral health when you are expecting. While some women may delay going to the dentist until after the birth of their baby, it is important to maintain a clean oral cavity during pregnancy. There are several reasons for this. It is known that hormone levels increase during pregnancy and can contribute to bleeding, swelling and inflammation of the gums which is commonly referred to as pregnancy gingivitis. Gum disease in pregnant women has been linked to premature delivery, preclampsia and low birth weight infants. Some women may experience an increase in tooth decay if they develop cravings that cause them to consume more carbohydrates or sweet foods and drinks. And women with morning sickness will expose their teeth to more acids that can cause tooth decay. For all of these reasons, it is best to continue your dental visits while pregnant. It is also important to maintain good hygiene habits during your pregnancy and to brush and floss regularly.

What You Need to Know About Oral Cancer
Oral cancer occurs more often in those over age 40. It affects twice as many men as women. The risk factors include tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, and sun exposure. A diet low in fruits and vegetables may play a role in cancer development, as these food groups contain antioxidants that are thought to have cancer-preventive benefits. Certain STDs such as Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) have been linked to oral cancer. Your dentist will conduct an oral cancer exam and screening during your routine visits and will check your face, neck, lips, and mouth. It is important to notify your dentist if you experience any of the following symptoms: a sore or lump in your mouth, throat or lip, difficulty swallowing or chewing, ear pain, a white or red patch in the mouth, difficulty moving the jaw or tongue, numbness of any part of the mouth, or swelling. Your dentist will evaluate the affected area and when indicated, refer to a specialist for biopsy and diagnosis. Early detection can lead to more successful treatment of oral cancer.

Implant or Bridge for a Missing Tooth?

Does Soda Cause Cavities?
Cavities are generally caused by the presence of bad bacteria in the mouth. They can also be caused by the foods and drinks that we consume. Soda, most definitely, can contribute to the development of caries. This is because soda is very acidic, and cavities can develop from low (acidic) pH levels. This is why brushing and flossing alone, will not prevent most cavities. It is important to watch what you eat and drink. Highly acidic foods and drinks cause the erosion of enamel and the formation of cavities. Foods and drinks such as candy, soda, wine, coffee and tea have low pH levels. Other foods such as bread, cheese, and milk have higher (more basic) pH levels and are less damaging to tooth structure. Tap water, in comparison, has an even higher pH level than these foods.

The treatment is generally part of an effort to save what’s left of your tooth before it has to be extracted, which most dentists try to avoid because of the oral health problems that can be caused by missing teeth. Root canal therapy can cleanse your tooth of infection and add extra protection to maintain your tooth for years to come.

What Can Dental Implants Do?
Not all replacement teeth are the same. Some are designed for a single lost tooth (like a dental bridge), while others are equipped to rebuild your smile after severe or total tooth loss (like partial and full dentures). What they all share, however, is the need for a support system that mimics your lost teeth roots as closely as the restoration mimics their crowns. That’s where dental implants come in .

3 Reasons Why We Recommend Tooth-Colored Fillings
Even if the main goal of your dental treatment is to restore a tooth, aesthetics (visual appeal) still plays a big role in maintaining your smile. If you’ve ever had a cavity treated with a metal filling, and you see it every time you smile or brush your teeth in the mirror, you might already understand. Fortunately, today’s dental fillings don’t have to be crafted from metal, and are often made from innovative composite resin, instead. Why Grinding Your Teeth Should Concern You
Your teeth are pretty formidable. Usually, they can adequately withstand the forces of biting and chewing your food several times every day, as well as the scrubbing of your toothbrush and floss. The Cavity Conundrum
The thought of cavities might be at the back of your mind every time you brush and floss your teeth (particularly the hope of not having any). Unless you do have one, though, you might not think much about them otherwise, like what cavities are , and why you should take every necessary step to avoid them. The problem lies in the bacteria that dwell in your mouth, which feed on the same substances you do and convert many of them into harmful acids. After a while, these acids erode your teeth’s outer layer of enamel, leaving teeth vulnerable to infectious, cavity-causing bacteria. Fortunately, you don’t have to starve yourself in addition to brushing and flossing in order to prevent cavities.

Is Brushing Your Teeth Enough?
For as long as most of us can remember, we’ve been admonished to brush our teeth at least twice a day, or after every meal if possible. The logic is sound; not brushing your teeth often enough will allow bacteria to accumulate into plaque, which coats the surfaces of your mouth, teeth, and gums. There are over 600 different identifiable kinds of oral bacteria, and when they’re excessively present in your mouth, you’re at a greater risk of developing serious oral health issues. Still, brushing your teeth is only a part of a good oral hygiene routine . If you neglect the rest of it, you are still at risk for oral health problems, even if you brush your teeth three or four times a day.
